Wilderness Mapper

Hex based mapper. This appears to be a Visual Basic based old Windows successor to the old DOS hex grid mapper program mentioned further down in this page.

AutoREALM Mapping System

AutoREALM is a free Fantasy Role-Playing mapper software and a new GNU Community of Role-Playing Gamers. There are sci-fi templates, not to mention the fact that laying out hex maps with outside terrain mostly looks the same whether you are making a sci-fi or fantasy map. Mountains, rivers, forests, etc .

RPG Manager

With RPG Manager you may create multi-layered hexagonal or square based maps. The tiles in this one are beautiful. It is free to make tiny maps, but if you want larger ones, you need to donate to get an unlock code. The "tiny" map is 52 x 24 squares which is plenty to do most of your mapping and to test drive the program to see if you deem it worth donating.

Inkscape

An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Don't expect fancy tiles and RPG map hand-holding on this one..it's a powerful general purpose graphics tool.

Blender

Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License. Very powerful package. I guess you could map with it, but mainly if you have some mad skills, you could use it to create 3D props for your game visual aids.

Paint.NET

Who needs Photoshop when you have this program. I find it easier to use than Photoshop and it has nearly everything I need.

Dungeon Crafter

Plenty of outdoor tilesets too. Not just for Dungeons.

Treasures Of The Ancients

Below you find some DOS goodies to feed your need to flashback to 1994-style computing.

Hex Mapping Grid Program I discovered from Kerry Jordan's old site

Thanks a bunch to Kerry D. Jordan for turning me on to this excellent hex mapping program years ago. It is fabulous considering it is DOS based. It exports to graphics formats. The place maps I have in my Campaign Resources section were done using this program and Kerry's template below.

Kerry Jordan's Gamma World Templates for Hex Mapping Grid Program

Also, thanks to Kerry again for taking the time to create a wonderful template set for use with the program. Kerry once said in the mailing list that he thought his site might be down for a while. I have mirrored his template here so that it not be lost from the online world if indeed his site is lost to us for a while.

Tormentor's Antique Gamma World Character Generator

This is an ancient version of a character generator I made for DOS back when I was 15 years old. I had newer versions with full mutation resolution (ie, if you roll Allergy, it will randomly determine which one) and with more mutant animal stocks....but none of these versions were really worth compiling from a "completeness" and user-friendly standpoint.
In 2010, I finally abandoned the QuickBasic 4.5 code and began my lifelong dream of developing a modern Windows app. Currently I'm using C# and Visual Studio 2008, but I bet by the time I finish, it will be using Visual Studio 2010.
Well, if you likes you some nice DOS nostalgia, then I keep this here for posterity.
